Every term below shows up on real quotes, diagnoses, and invoices. Each entry gives the definition first and the practical homeowner angle second — what the term costs you, saves you, or warns you about.
AFUE
AFUE measures what share of a furnace’s fuel becomes heat in your home.
Air Handler
The air handler is the indoor half of many HVAC systems — blower, coil, and filter in one cabinet.
Auxiliary heat
AUX HEAT on the thermostat means backup electric coils are helping your heat pump.
Balance Point
The balance point is the outdoor temperature where a heat pump exactly matches your home’s heat loss — and backup heat starts.
Blower Motor
The blower motor moves every cubic foot of conditioned air in your house.
BTU
A BTU is the heat needed to raise one pound of water 1°F.
C-wire (common wire)
The C-wire gives a smart thermostat continuous 24V power.
Capacitor (HVAC)
The run capacitor is the most commonly failed AC part — the humming-unit, fan-not-spinning classic.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) & HVAC
Carbon monoxide is the invisible risk of fuel-burning heat.
Compressor
The compressor is the heart of an AC or heat pump — and its most expensive component.
Condensate Line
Your AC pulls gallons of water from the air daily — the condensate line drains it.
Condensate pump
A condensate pump lifts AC and furnace drain water when gravity has nowhere to go.
Condenser
The condenser is the outdoor unit of an AC or heat pump — coil, compressor, and fan that reject indoor heat outside.
Defrost cycle
Steam, whooshing, and a pause in heating: the heat pump defrost cycle looks alarming and is usually normal.
Degree Days (HDD/CDD)
Degree days measure how hard a climate works your HVAC — heating (HDD) and cooling (CDD) loads summed across a year.
Draft inducer
The draft inducer is the small fan that starts before your furnace burners and proves safe venting.
Dual-fuel system
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and runs whichever heats cheaper at the current temperature.
Ductwork
Ducts distribute conditioned air through your house — and leak 20–30% of it in typical homes.
EPA Section 608 Certification
EPA Section 608 certification is legally required for anyone handling refrigerant.
ERV / HRV (energy & heat recovery ventilators)
ERVs and HRVs bring fresh outdoor air into tight homes while recapturing most of the heat you paid for.
Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil is where your AC actually cools air — refrigerant evaporates inside it, absorbing heat.
Flame Sensor
The flame sensor proves your furnace’s burners actually lit — and when dirty, shuts them down seconds after ignition.
Fresh air intake
A fresh air intake ducts outdoor air into your HVAC return so a tight house can breathe.
Gas valve
The gas valve meters fuel to furnace burners on the control board’s command.
Heat Exchanger
The heat exchanger separates your furnace’s flame and fumes from the air you breathe.
Heat Pump
A heat pump is an AC that runs in both directions — moving heat out in summer and in during winter.
Hot-Surface Ignitor
The hot-surface ignitor glows white-hot to light your furnace — and is its most-replaced part.
HSPF2
HSPF2 rates heat pump heating efficiency under the current federal test.
HVAC
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning — the systems controlling temperature, humidity, and air quality in a building.
HVAC Zoning
Zoning divides one HVAC system into independently controlled areas via motorized dampers or mini-split heads.
HVACR
HVACR adds Refrigeration to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
IAQ covers the particles, humidity, and gases in your indoor air.
Limit Switch
The limit switch shuts your furnace’s burners off before it overheats.
Manual J (Load Calculation)
Manual J is the ACCA standard for calculating how much heating and cooling a house needs.
MERV Rating
MERV rates how well a filter captures particles, 1–16 for homes.
Mini-Split (Ductless)
A mini-split is a ductless heat pump: an outdoor unit feeding one or more wall-mounted indoor heads through a small refrigerant line.
Packaged unit
A packaged unit puts the whole HVAC system — coils, compressor, blower, often gas heat — in one outdoor cabinet.
Plenum
The plenum is the sheet-metal box connecting your furnace or air handler to the duct system — supply on top, return on the side.
R-454B refrigerant
R-454B is the low-GWP refrigerant replacing R-410A in new air conditioners and heat pumps from 2025 on.
Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat out of your house.
SEER2
SEER2 is the current federal efficiency rating for air conditioners and heat pumps, measured under realistic duct pressure.
Short-Cycling
Short-cycling is HVAC starting and stopping in quick bursts instead of running steadily.
Static Pressure
Static pressure is the blood pressure of your duct system.
Thermocouple
The thermocouple holds a standing pilot’s gas open only while flame exists.
Thermostat
The thermostat is the control brain of your HVAC system.
Ton (of Cooling)
A ton of cooling is 12,000 BTU per hour — a unit from the ice-harvesting era.
TXV (thermostatic expansion valve)
The TXV meters refrigerant into the evaporator coil, matching flow to load.
Variable-Speed HVAC
Variable-speed (inverter) HVAC modulates output instead of blasting on and off — steadier temps, real dehumidification, lower bills.
Whole-home dehumidifier
A whole-home dehumidifier wrings moisture from house air independent of cooling.
Whole-home humidifier
A whole-home humidifier mounts on the ductwork and moistens winter air for the entire house.
